Genesys at the PK Open Days: Can Artificial Intelligence Read Your Handwriting?

11.04.2025

Open Days are always a fantastic opportunity to show future students that computer science is not just code on a screen but, above all, fascinating practical solutions. On April 11, 2025, in the sports hall on Kamienna Street, our booth attracted crowds of high-school visitors.

Interactive AI Lesson

For this event, our members — Mikołaj Munik, Bartosz Pieróg, Julia Polak, and Dawid Puchała — prepared a dedicated web application. The system relied on neural networks, and its task was to recognize digits hand-drawn by users on a digital canvas.

But we wanted to show more than just a “working program.”
To demonstrate how crucial the training process is in artificial intelligence, we provided visitors with two tablets running different model versions:

  1. “Master” Tablet — Equipped with a well-trained model that accurately recognized the user's drawings.
  2. “Apprentice” Tablet — Contained a poorly trained model, which often made mistakes, confusing e.g., a 3 with an 8.

This simple experiment clearly demonstrated what a data engineer’s work looks like and why choosing the right training dataset is so important.

Genesys Representation

Technology alone isn’t everything — people matter just as much. At our booth, we were represented by Danylo Denysov, Arkadiusz Knapik, Gabriela Obrzud, and Przemysław Plata.

Our team not only explained how the application worked and introduced visitors to the basics of neural networks, but also shared their experiences as students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Telecommunications. They answered questions about courses, student life, and development opportunities, encouraging high-school graduates to join the community of the Krakow University of Technology.

We would like to thank everyone who visited our booth. We hope to see many of you again in October — this time in the lecture halls!
